Crib
A crib in the old English Bible is a feeding trough, the place where an ox or a donkey is fed. Only three verses use the word. Proverbs 14:4 says “Where no oxen are, the crib is clean: but much increase is by the strength of the ox,” a plain saying that a spotless stall and a fruitful field rarely go together. Isaiah 1:3 turns the picture into a rebuke: “The ox knoweth his owner, and the ass his master’s crib: but Israel doth not know.” Job 39:9 asks whether a wild creature would ever stay beside one.
