Cosmetics
Painted faces appear in Scripture, and never as a compliment. When Jehu came to Jezreel, Jezebel “painted her face, and tired her head, and looked out at a window.” Jeremiah 4 tells a doomed city that though it is decked with gold and “rentest thy face with painting, in vain shalt thou make thyself fair.” Ezekiel 23 describes women who washed, painted their eyes and dressed up for lovers who would turn on them. In each case the makeup is a show put on in a bad hour. The verses speak of these stories, not of cosmetics in general.
