Consistency
Jesus has little patience for a faith that is one thing in public and another in private. “They say, and do not,” he says of the teachers who laid heavy burdens on others (Matthew 23:3), and he calls them hypocrites for polishing the outside of the cup while the inside stays unclean. The verses here gather that thread, along with warnings about deceit, “No man can serve two masters,” and James’s “double minded man is unstable in all his ways.” Jesus asks for the opposite: a single heart whose words and deeds match. Matthew 6 and Matthew 23 are the two chapters where he speaks of it most directly.
