Breeches

Priests were given a garment that no one was meant to see. Moses is told to make linen breeches “to cover their nakedness; from the loins even unto the thighs they shall reach.” They are named again among the priestly clothes in Exodus 39, worn with “the holy linen coat” in Leviticus 16, and worn while the priest takes up the ashes from the burnt offering in Leviticus 6. Ezekiel’s vision of a future temple has priests in linen, with nothing “that causeth sweat.” Even the plainest piece of clothing was part of approaching God with care.
