Wax
Wax appears in the Psalms and the prophets as a picture of what cannot stand near heat. “As wax melteth before the fire, so let the wicked perish at the presence of God,” says Psalm 68:2. Psalm 97:5 says the hills melted like wax at the presence of the LORD, and Micah 1:4 describes mountains molten and valleys split open before him. In Psalm 22:14 the same image turns inward, as a suffering man feels his own heart is like wax, melted within him. Two uses, one picture: nothing, from hills to a human heart, is steady apart from God’s presence.
