Tutor
A tutor in the Bible is someone who looks after a child until he is grown. Paul uses the picture in Galatians 4, where an heir, though lord of all, is as a child “under tutors and governors until the time appointed of the father.” He means that people were held in a kind of careful keeping before Christ came. Elsewhere the idea is simpler. Jehu writes to the men who brought up Ahab’s sons in Samaria, and Paul says in Acts 22:3 that he was brought up in Jerusalem and taught at the feet of Gamaliel.
