Tailoring

The tabernacle needed more than carpenters and goldsmiths; it needed people who could make fine clothes. In Exodus 31, God names Bezaleel and Aholiab, and says he has filled the first with “the spirit of God, in wisdom, and in understanding, and in knowledge, and in all manner of workmanship.” The work included “the holy garments for Aaron the priest.” Exodus 39 tells how the makers wove blue, purple and scarlet cloth “as the LORD commanded Moses.” Skilled sewing and weaving are treated here as real service to God, done with care and given a place in the story.

Exodus 31:2

See, I have called by name Bezaleel the son of Uri, the son of Hur, of the tribe of Judah:

And I have filled him with the spirit of God, in wisdom, and in understanding, and in knowledge, and in all manner of workmanship,

And I, behold, I have given with him Aholiab, the son of Ahisamach, of the tribe of Dan: and in the hearts of all that are wise hearted I have put wisdom, that they may make all that I have commanded thee;

And the cloths of service, and the holy garments for Aaron the priest, and the garments of his sons, to minister in the priest's office,

And of the blue, and purple, and scarlet, they made cloths of service, to do service in the holy place, and made the holy garments for Aaron; as the LORD commanded Moses.
