Murrain (a Disease of Livestock)
Murrain is an old word for a deadly disease among livestock, and the Bible uses it in the story of Egypt’s plagues. Moses warns that the hand of the LORD would fall on Egypt’s horses, donkeys, camels, oxen and sheep. The next day Egypt’s cattle died, “but of the cattle of the children of Israel died not one.” The psalmist later remembers it among the ways God dealt with Egypt, speaking of the pestilence. The story is told as one of ten hard signs that led up to Israel’s release. Exodus 9 holds the whole account.

Behold, the hand of the LORD is upon thy cattle which is in the field, upon the horses, upon the asses, upon the camels, upon the oxen, and upon the sheep: there shall be a very grievous murrain.
