Memucan

At a royal banquet a queen refused to come when the king called, and the king asked his wise men what the law required. Memucan answered first. He warned that her refusal would spread contempt among the wives of the empire, and he advised that she come no more before the king. The advice “pleased the king and the princes,” and the king acted on it. Memucan appears only in this scene, in the first chapter of Esther. His counsel clears the way for a new queen to be chosen, and the rest of the book follows from that.
