(1.) Son of Merari, the son of Levi and ancestor of the family of the Mahlites. (Numbers 3:20; 1 Chronicles 6:19,29; 24:26)
(2.) Bon of Mushi and grandson of Merari. (1 Chronicles 6:47; 23:23; 24:30)
Mahli was a Levite, a son of Merari, whose name is recorded again and again in Chronicles. Exodus spells it “Mahali,” but it is the same family, with Mushi as his brother. Mahli’s own sons are listed later, and his descendants are counted among the Levites who served in the house of God. The family carried and cared for the structure of the tabernacle in the wilderness. Here the Bible spends its words on ordinary families doing assigned work, and keeps their names for the generations after them. First Chronicles 6 and 23 follow Mahli’s line.
