Ice

The Bible mentions ice only a few times, and always as something beyond human control. In Job, the Lord asks, “Out of whose womb came the ice?” and the question is left for Job to ponder. A psalm says God “casteth forth his ice like morsels,” and asks who can stand before his cold. Proverbs borrows the coolness of snow at harvest time as a picture of a faithful messenger who refreshes the one who sent him. So frozen water points to God’s power in creation, and also to something welcome. Psalm 147 and Job 38 are good places to read.
